Hatha yoga is a path toward creating balance and uniting opposites. As in balancing the masculine aspects: dynamic, hot, solar, sun (HA) and feminine aspects: passive, cool, lunar , moon (THA) energies within us all. The traditional 'Hatha' Yoga practices are designed to harmonise your body, mind, and soul, which help bring peace and calm in preparation for deeper spiritual practices such as meditation.
A typical class begins with an initial relaxation and a chance to settle and draw the attention inwards. A variety of spiritual, meditative, physical and energetic practices are included such as ancient philosophy, pranayama (breathing techniques), mantra (chanting), mudra (hand gestures), and standing and seated asanas (postures)
The postures develop strength and flexibility and in conjunction with intentional breathing, were created to cleanse and open the many channels of the body, especially the main channel (the spine) so energy can flow freely. There is a period of winding down and preparation for relaxation, this may include restorative work and Dhyana (meditation).
A dynamic Hatha flow yoga class focuses on controlling the mind through the control of body postures (asanas) and breathing (pranayama). Hatha yoga means balancing the body, breath and the mind and this class involves more vigorous movement than the other Hatha Yoga classes.
Classes begin with a gentle warm-up, cultivating breath and body awareness and releasing tension in the muscles and joints. Prānayamas (breathing in life energy) are exercises and techniques for obtaining good control of your mind in preparation for the dynamic energetic sequences, that are designed to challenge you by working up a sweat through the continuous flow from one yoga posture to the next, linking the movements to the breath (vinyasa).
Holding the poses for longer helps to develop strength, fitness, stamina and flexibility, that can have a have a direct influence on the flow of your thoughts and your thinking.
Sequences vary each week and depends on the theme and physical focus of the day blending the energies of body, mind, and spirit..
Meditation is the process of turning your attention inward with one-pointed focus and bringing about a deep sense of peace and calm.
Starting with a passive initial relaxation to release tension in the muscles and joints and to allow the body to completely let go. Breathing techniques (pranayama) are practised to slow down the mind into the present moment and to balance out the central nervous system helping you relax deeply. There are many meditative practices used such as guided visualisation, yoga nidra, manta meditation, leading to a silent meditation.

Discover the true meaning of yoga
" To achieve that state of lasting happiness and absolute peace, we must first know how to calm the mind, to concentrate and go beyond the mind. By turning the mind's concentration inward, upon the self, we can deepen that experience of perfect concentration. This is the state of Meditation." Swami Sivananda
